Is the entire bag handmade?

Yes!! We go to textile markets in Guatemala to select vintage Huipils (traditional, Guatemalan, embroidered tops) where they are then delivered to our leather craftsman. He washes and cuts the Huipil to fit the bag and hand treats his leather. No machines other than a simple sewing machine are used on our bags!

How do I care for my fabric? Our up cycled Huipils can take up to 3 months to make and could even be up to 10 years old! We are excited to gather these textiles and give new life to them for you to enjoy! If you notice loose threads you can take a small pair of scissors to clip the loose thread at the base. You could also take some fabric glue and secure the loose thread at the base to prevent snagging. Grace&Leighton are not responsible for any damage during your care of the item. This includes washing/dry cleaning. If you have a bag that is hand loomed cotton, spot clean with warm water and a mild detergent.

How do I care for my leather?

Exposing your leather bag to sun, water, oils, or make up will cause the bag to darken in color (patina) and accumulate marks. This is natural and gives your bag character that mass produced bags cannot receive. Be sure to take care of your bag and when needed, wipe down with a damp cloth and allow to dry naturally. We also recommend using a leather conditioner to extend the life of your leather bag.
